about

The source of this track is the audio from a 30 second video of the M6 recorded in early August 2020 from the Brockholes nature reserve up near Preston. The nature reserve runs at the side of the M6 and, perhaps, runs as a contradiction to it.
I spent a couple of hours there and I truthfully found it quite stressful. On the one hand you have this awful drone of the M6, which is so loud and all consuming and then the birds and nature and woodlands just going about its business not even trying to compete with the racket. I was amazed the birdsong was even picked up on the recording. I managed to isolate the birdsong reasonably well, enough to make it the new focus in the finished track. In fact, the drone of the M6 that I found so overwhelming was actually quite quiet compared to the birds. It was, however, ever present, but quieter than I thought it would be. I have attempted to manipulate this stressful environment to create a false sanctuary.
I mentioned the sound on Twitter that day and Gareth E Rees got in touch to say say he'd be happy to contribute some narration to the track as he had written about the M6 (amongst other things) in his new book 'Unofficial Britain: Journeys Through Unexpected Places' and thought it would work well with the drone I'd made. Probably a week later I had the narration audio and that evening the track was complete.
